Listen Closely

Times are a-changing for music and the way we listen to it. LPs are making a comeback for some audiophiles and collectors but MP3s have taken over as the dominant delivery method for most. I still buy cds when I can because of their tangibility. There is just something about being able to hold something in your hand that makes me feel like more like an owner. If the computer crashes and the back-ups fail I still have the original cd to re-rip my music.

I  had boxes of cds that never saw the light of day since I ripped the audio to my computer. What to do with them? I scanned literally hundreds of the CD covers and sleeves and cut them up to form this ear image based on Michelangelo’s statue of David. If you “look closely”, you can see everything from Led Zeppelin to Eminem. I utilized a variable grid with full sized cds  near the outside, scaling down to 1/4th midway and 1/9th  in the middle for detail.

This piece won 1st prize in the Kamloops Juried Art Show.
