Guatemalan Elder

guatman8x10

This portrait of a Guatemalan Elder is a vintage coloured pencil drawing I did many years ago. I found the man’s photo in an old copy of National Geographic and combined it a with a slide I took of a Mayan tile mask in a Mexico City Museum. To increase the colour saturation, I used increased pressure, which caused me finger pain, forcing me to abandon this illustration technique.

Years later the same photographer, David Alan Harvey, went back and found the same man and took another portrait of him. He hadn’t changed much at all.
